It seems a little unusual that the types ofhealing that have existed for several millennia are called “alternative” and modern western medicine, which has only be around for a few centuries, is called “traditional”. Typically, the response to that is to say that western medicine is based on science and other forms of medicine are not. That idea is simply false. However, the fact is that Chinese Medicine, as one example, has been practiced and documented for over two thousand years. The important word here is “documented” because that really means that the Chinese experimented with different forms of treatment based on their theory of medicine and documented what worked and what didn’t. That’s what the scientific method is all about. You don’t have to have all kinds of electronic gizmos to be scientific. Isaac Newton didn’t have those gizmos either.
One of the main differences between holistic healing and modern western medicine is that the holistic forms include the theory of the human aura energy. A lot of people say that the human aura energy is a lot of mumbo jumbo and isn’t scientific, but, actually, it does fit nicely with the most modern theories in western science.
Historically, humans are like ostriches when it comes to forms of energy. If they don’t see it, then it doesn’t exist. People have always come up with strange descriptions for energy from magic to gods. Now we are aware of electromagnetic, gravitational, and nuclear forces and the attempt has been underway for some time to unify all of these different forms of energy into a unified field theory. It would be foolish to assume that we have made every scientific discovery possible.
The Journey From Newton to Einstein
Most people are familiar with science from the Newtonian point of view. That is typically taught at the high school level. We’re taught that planets are like giant marbles moving around in space and being influenced by forces like gravity and collisions. It’s the viewpoint of sort of a cosmic pool table. That point of view was also reflected in early ideas about atoms. Most people are familiar with the billiard ball theory of electrons orbiting around a nucleus made of protons and neutrons.
Well, that was out of date by 1920 when Erwin Schrodinger showed that electrons, protons, and neutrons could also be thought of as waves. About the same time Albert Einstein came up with his now famous equation E=MC2 relating matter to energy. These two events dramatically changed physics because it shifted scientific thinking from a rigid, static marble viewpoint to a vibrational, possibility viewpoint… but most people don’t really understand this viewpoint because it’s usually not taught until the second year of college physics and chemistry.
For the last 80 years scientists have been searching for the most fundamental building blocks of the universe. Today, the most modern thinking is string theory. In essence, this theory suggests that the most fundamental particles are like amazingly small vibrating strings. The theory investigates the properties and energetic interactions of these most subtle multi-dimensional vibrations… and it’s those properties and interactions that result in denser matter quarks to form, and their interactions result in denser matter sub-atomic particles to form, and their interactions result in denser electrons, protons, and neutrons to form, and their interactions result in denser atoms to form, and their interactions result in denser molecules to form, and, finally, their interactions result in cars, TVs, rocks, water, fish, animals, birds, and people. The implication here is that at the most subtle levels the only thing that exists is vibration. It gets denser and denser to finally form human beings and other things.
Holistic Healing
The idea of everything starting with subtle vibrational energy is exactly the point of view found in alternative healing methods. Chinese Medicine calls the fundamental building energy of the universe Qi. This energy interacts to create denser and denser forms and varieties to eventually form the world and human beings. In a sense, modern science is catching up to the basic theories of oriental medicine, yoga, and the martial arts that have been around for thousands of years.
